Your Daily Routine

“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success or happiness is found in your daily routine.”
– John Maxwell

We hear so much about daily routines, but not much about how important they are to achieve the things you want, the goals you set.

After you decide what you really want in your life and set achievable goals, it is important to remember that the key to achieving those goals is to complete small daily tasks which you have derived from your big goals.

One thing that really helps is setting aside a specific time at the end of each day, to reflect on your goals for the week, and then making a list of achievable tasks that you would like to complete the following day that will move you a step closer to them. It is recommended that you make a manageable list of around 3 – 5 tasks but you know what you can realistically accomplish. Do not forget to prioritise your tasks and do only those things that are important and relevant to achieving your goals.

“If the first thing that you do when you wake up in the morning is to eat a live frog, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that’s probably the worst thing that’s going to happen to you all day long.”
– Mark Twain

After writing your task list, review it and ask yourself:  “If I could only complete one thing on my list, what would it be?” The task you choose should be the one that will have the most impact.  Make a pledge to yourself that you will work on only this task first thing in the morning until it is completed. It is vital that you complete your most important task first thing in the morning and eliminate the temptation to procrastinate. Procrastination is one of the main reasons why we do not achieve what we set to do.

Repeat the prioritising process and arrange your tasks in order of impact and importance.

To keep your productivity levels high, do few tasks each day but make sure they are important things that will move you closer to your goals.

During each day, we get busy and sometimes find it easy to get distracted. When this happens, remind yourself that any distraction you allow detracts you from reaching your goals. Avoid any form of distraction until you have completed at least two of your most important tasks.

A good tip to keep focused and motivated is to make sure your tasks are performance and not outcome related. An example of an outcome task is “I will make £2,000 worth of sales today”, while a performance task is “I will make 20 sales calls before noon today”.

Whatever you do, remember that if you want to achieve the life you want, you need to spend some time thinking of what you really want and setting achievable tasks and goals.
